Sherlock Holmes Character
Just Wondering. What do you think someone who find if they psychoanalyzed Sherlock Holmes? I mean he's defiantly not normal. I noticed that in the story, The Man With The Twisted Lip, Watson remarks that Holmes will not rest until a case is solved which often leads to many sleepless nights for the detective. After reading this, as I read further stories I began to pick up on details that make Holmes look strange. He can deduct anything, and is somewhat obsessed with mystery. If he sat down with a psychiatrist what do you think they would deduct :-)

Holmes definitely is strange. His attention to detai could be explained by OCD. It would also explain his obsession with solving mysteries. I often had him say to Watson, "you see the same as me, you just don't analyze it" or something along those lines. I don't think it's a bad thing though. It makes him a very good detective. As he shows no other signs of strange consistencies (in fact Watson says he is the man of habit in the Adventure of the Speckled Band). would say Holmes is somewhat depressed and we know he does drugs. I can tell he likes having Watson as company and I think that helps him.
ReplyDeleteDo you all think that it is solely due to his OCD like tendencies that he is such a god detective?
ReplyDeleteI think if someone analyzed Holmes they might find him a little OCD, but I don't believe that is what makes him a good detective. He probably naturally notices small details, and years of detective experience has trained him to look for certain clues. Eventually, his powers of deduction alienated others, and that is why he acts crazy. He is slowly losing touch with society, so to everyone else, he seems like a nutcase. However, he's just a good detective who places his mysteries before other social needs.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think his depression and drug use is due to his lack of social interactions. He craves for something to make him feel happy or excited. Drugs are probably his escape.
I didn't mean to say that it is solely his OCD-like ways, but also his obsession with crime. I have found in my every day life that those who are passionate about something are, most-often, those who are best at it. Because he solves crimes because he enjoys it, not just because he gets rewarded with money or honor, he has that as motivation to excel.
