Sounds like House

I'm sure you guys probably know House was based on Holmes (the creator even said he made up the name House because Holmes sounds like "Homes" : D). Well, while reading "The Five Orange Pips" I just found these lines amusing: "Some friend of yours, perhaps?" "Except yourself I have none. I do not encourage visitors." I think that just sounded like House because no one can stand House except Wilson.

  1. I actually had no clue it was based on these stories! That's incredible! I definitely see the resemblance, though.
    Here's a question:
    Does Watson = Wilson?

  2. Yes Wilson is the metaphoric Watson, and isn't interesting to see how similar House and Holmes are, even when the script is not asking them to be? When I Holmes sums up his logic, he always says something to the effect of "Didn't you catch that?" and when House is summing up his diagnosis, he's like, "Obviously this means this and that means that. Why didn't anyone else catch that?"

  3. I think Watson and Wilson are a little different, though. They are definitely the metaphorical pair; however, they have some glaring differences with their general characters and, more importantly, their relationship to Holmes/House. With House, Wilson is taken advantage of, screwed with, emotionally and physically attacked, and treated harshly. This is the direct opposite in Holmes. He admits that Watson is his only friend. He Asks Watson to say and declares him trustworthy in the presence of Holmes' employers. They both share the fact that they live with House/Holmes for an amount of time and they are the 'sidekick' of the story. I'm curious as to why they have such huge differences. I wonder if it has to do with the changes in society and how we see friendships/sidekicks nowadays. I don't believe the show House would be nearly as successful if House and Wilson got along as well as Watson and Holmes.
What does everyone else think about this?

  4. Also, House is a blatent jerk, while holmes is much more subtle. Maybe its just the time period. I can definitely see his know-it-all aditude. House is like a hyper-defined holmes.

  5. Didnt see Leah's final question! I think watson and Holmes get along but only casually. House and wilson are much more personal. I think, also, that watson andholmes arent exactly buds. They get along but i can tell theyre not exactly thrilled with eachother.

  6. I agree with your belief that Watson and Holmes are much more casual and House and Wilson are more personal. I also see that as having to do with the difference in time period. I feel as if back in the 1800s grown men wouldn't be as personal as House and Wilson are unless they were related. Nowadays it's much easier to find close ties with people that aren't direct family.
I disagree with your remark that they aren't buds or exactly thrilled with each other. Often times Watson just goes to see Holmes because he wants to. In the Scandal in Bohemia, Watson explains, when he passes in front of Holmes' house on Baker-street, that he "was seized with a keen desire to see Holmes again..." Also, in The Case of Identity, Watson decided to go off with Holmes instead of returning home even though it's 10 or 11 at night time. Holmes asks him to come along and he isn't upset with spending another night with Holmes, rather excited to be on another case. In Blue Carbuncle the story begins with Watson dropping in on Holmes to wish him a Merry Christmas. I think Watson is very fond of Holmes.
Holmes is also quite fond of Watson. In almost every story he deems Watson as trustworthy to the people that come to Holmes for advice. As was already posted in a different strand he claims how Watson is his only friend. Every time Watson shows up to his house he asks him to stay. In Blue Carbuncle this exact thing happens, and as Watson says, "You are engaged, perhaps I interrupt you," Holmes replies with, "Not at all. I am glad to have a friend with whom I can discuss my results." I see their relationship as pure fondness for each other. They definitely get along well, but I think they also enjoy each other's presence and wish to spend time together. I don't think they're extremely open about how much they enjoy their friendship, but it means a lot to them.

  7. I agree with Leah's assessment that they have a close relationship because they used to live together in the apartment on Barker Street (also similar to how House and Wilson shared an apartment) so they're used to each other's quirks and accept them. I think they don't show their closeness as some men might do today because that is now people interacted then. I mean, in today's society, men might bond over football, or some other hobby/interest, but back then, people just sat around and held interesting conversation (people also played sports, but they were usually more eloquent sports like polo...) so I think the time difference and location difference (London vs. Princeton) accounts for the "distance" between Watson and Holmes.
