Does This Look Like Homles

I went on the Sherlock Holmes article on Wikipedia, and was taken back by the drawing of Holmes. Beside the pipe, it is not how I pictured him at all. What do you all think?

  1. I mean, Holmes, not Homles, sorry...That's embarrassing.

  2. haha homles.... that's not how i pictured Holmes at all. I pictured him with the "dazzling and excited eyes" that are always described when he knows something. i also pictured him as a bit of a "young bachelor." not with a receding hair line :P

  3. I agree, this is not what I saw in my mind for Holmes. But I think it's really subject, and all of our Holmes probably look vastly different. I see Holmes as a mix of inconsistencies. For example, he probably looks tall and domineering, but really is quiet and observant. I see him as someone who could take control, but chooses to stand back and learn about different situations.

  4. that's interesting. i see him as someone that another might think to over power, but really has a lot of unexpected strength.

  5. At first I compared him to Agatha Christie's mystery detective, Hercule Poirot. Poirot is short in size, European, and wears a funny mustache. (I did not picture Holmes to look that physically, however, I thought he would share some of the same qualities of Poirot, as seem through his actions.) Poirot knows he's a good detective and expects recognition for it. He is kind in nature, and has many friends, yet appears to be full of himself in certain situations. This causes him to always take control. Holmes, on the other hand, does not expect recognition. Sometimes he even investigates his cases incognito. Like in the first mystery we read, were he hides his identity from Irene. Poirot often is the opposite, and lets suspects know he is investigating them. I do not think that Holmes is completely full of himself, however, his introvert personality when dealing with cases, sometimes leads the reader to believe that Holmes believes he can do anything on his own. This is also shown though the plans he devises to catch criminals. They often focus on many variables to go perfectly, but Holmes seems assured that everything will work out. In other words he has an amazing belief in himself. I do not think that this qualifies him as self-centerered, like Poirot who will go around saying, "Haven't you heard of me? I am Hercule Poirot, the very successful detective" to complete strangers (Death on the Nile). But, I do not think he is the most humble person either. Physically I pictured him as a taller Poirot, (without the mustache) sporting a trench coat, and one of those funny hats.

  6. i agree that he is confident in his own abilities. i would call it honesty. he really is the best in his field and he is aware of it. i don't know if you guys ever watch bones but the main character, temperance brennan, makes statements sometimes that she is the best in her field, not to brag, but because it is a simple fact. Holmes knows he can lose cases and takes it quite personally when he does. like in the five orange pips when the results were fatal. i admire holmes' confidence, his ability and his modesty.
